Explaining preparedness towards hydrometeorological hazards. An exploratory study in Mexico

This study explores how the threat and appraisal constructs proposed by Protection Motivation Theory affect preparedness behavior towards hydrometeorological hazards contingent to confidence on governmental support, individual’s social vulnerability, his/her previous experience with a natural threat. Data from an online survey of residents two Mexican coastal counties was used provide empirical support conceptual model developed. The analytical results structural equation modelling indicate that high in authorities’ has non-significant effect preventive behaviors but negatively affects perceived coping selfefficacy socially vulnerable individuals. Additionally, is triggered risk or factors depending hazard. These findings advise 1) better manage expectations disadvantaged regarding assistance improving their self-protection ability threats, 2) offset decreased perception households who are exposed warnings regularly. main limitation this small purposing sample empirically validate proposed.
